Knee pain

From runner's knee to osteoarthritis — strength is the common thread.

What it is

Knee pain in younger, active people is usually a tracking or overload problem around the kneecap; in later life it's more often osteoarthritis. Both are helped substantially by targeted strengthening, and neither means you have to stop being active.

Common signs

How physiotherapy helps

We find the source, settle it down, and build the hip and thigh strength that takes load off the knee. For osteoarthritis we also cover pacing, footwear and, where useful, injection therapy.

When to be seen sooner

Get urgent advice if you have severe or spreading weakness, numbness around the back passage, loss of bladder or bowel control, unexplained weight loss, or pain that's severe and unrelenting at night. These are uncommon but need prompt assessment.
