Sciatica

Leg pain from an irritated nerve in the lower back — usually treatable without surgery.

What it is

Sciatica is pain, pins and needles or weakness travelling down the leg because a nerve root in the lower back is irritated, often by a disc bulge. It can be intense, but most cases improve over weeks with the right approach, and surgery is rarely needed.

Common signs

How physiotherapy helps

We confirm it's nerve-related, use positions and techniques that ease the nerve, and progress your movement and strength as the leg calms down. We refer on quickly if any warning signs appear.

When to be seen sooner

Get urgent advice if you have severe or spreading weakness, numbness around the back passage, loss of bladder or bowel control, unexplained weight loss, or pain that's severe and unrelenting at night. These are uncommon but need prompt assessment.
